Global warming ------ (Click to select text)
The earth’s climate is predicted to change because human actions are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the increase of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Global warming is a problem that everybody should be aware and concerned about. It affects you no matter how or where you live, it could cause mass destruction and chaos. Global warming is the rise in the earth’s average temperature resulting from the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming poses serious dangers, like flooding, drought, famine and disease. Global warming occurs when the levels of greenhouse gasses rise and less infrared light, or heat, escapes the earth's atmosphere. Thus, the temperature experienced on Earth begins to rise. Climate change is a part of the Earth's history. There have been dramatic fluctuations in overall average temperature for the past 150,000 years that are a direct association with carbon dioxide levels. In the past the temperature highs and lows have been the same with carbon dioxide level highs and lows, this does not seem to be a mere coincidence. Carbon dioxide currently accounts for 0.03% of the gas content within the atmosphere. However, it has a adverse impact on the earth's temperature. Thus, minor fluctuations in the percentage of atmospheric carbon dioxide will likely have a significant effect on the global temperature. The percentage of atmospheric carbon dioxide has risen over the past century at an alarming rate. Industrial civilization is essentially driven by fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gasoline all of these are a major factor in carbon dioxide emissions. Even if we change our practices in time to avoid these climatic disturbances, the environment will still have an effected and this is including all the ecological history. The environment may initially shape the range of choices available to a people at a given moment, but then culture reshapes environment in responding to those choices. There are many possible adverse side effects of global warming on living and nonliving systems. For example, certain types of crops or animal products might not be able to be grown because of changes in the atmosphere. Then maybe they will realize that nature is something that we have to work with and can’t live with out. Prices of food clothing, just about everything will dramatically rise. But hopefully we can detour this cataclysmic event. In addition to raising temperatures scientists discovered that chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), long used as refrigerants and as aerosol spray propellants, damage the ozone layer. Destruction of the ozone layer is predicted to increase the incidence of skin cancer, damage crops and the marine food web, and to lead to an increase in carbon dioxide, possibly enhancing global warming by decreasing the number of absorbers; trees, plankton, etc. Does this seem like something that you want to happen? I think the answer is no! Global warming is something that is, surprisingly, debated over. People actually debate weather or not that global warming is true and that it will not affect us. Disgruntling as this sounds, it can be proven that global warming is really affecting our environment. From the increase in skin cancer to the rise of the average temperature our climate is definitely being affected by something. There has been only one thing that has been proven to be able to accomplish tremendous feats and that is global warming. The affects that it can produce will be unimaginable if we continue at the rate that we are going at. Global Warming has to be one of the most threatening and scary phrases I have ever remember hearing and then I realized that if I do little things it can make a very small difference, but a difference none the less. And if you make a small difference, we have now made a bigger difference, and that just seems to escalate until you have a difference that we can all actually see.
